South Carolina Prison Deficit

The South Carolina Department of Corrections has run up a $29 million deficit. Legislators are considering the release of nonviolent inmates early to ease budget costs. Governor Mark Sanford has stated that he is opposed to releasing nonviolent offenders.

Angola Prison Budget Reexamined

Warden Burl Cain of Angola Prison addressed budgetary concerns to a room of legislators today. Cain says that he has reduced costs by double bunking beds and replacing guards with cameras, but some of these changes are unsustainable. He says there are roughly 200 inmates that he feels should be released.

Budget Cuts Reach Georgia Prisons

Prisoners in the Georgia Department of Corrections are now beginning to feel the recession too. Georgia correctional facilities have started cutting back meals for the prisoners, some days inmates are forced to deal with smaller portions and other days they go entirely without lunch. Other correctional facilities have been making changes like forgoing fresh fruth and milk. Many believe this is the start of a terrible trend that could force inmates to skip meals, depriving them of necessary nutrients that may in turn cause irratability and spark violence. Many correctional facility heads argue that these cut-backs are not harmful and do not deprive inmates of nutrition.
