Gabriel City is a community for the tens of millions of Americans directly affected by our criminal justice system. We come together to share our stories and help to shape new ones. Inmates and the formerly incarcerated, family members of those serving time, men and women under community supervision, professionals in criminal justice and corrections, and the victims of crime; we support and respect each other as we work to break the endless cycle of crime and incarceration that afflicts our nation.

Getting a job in America during the current economic recession is not easy. But for ex-convicts, the situation is especially difficult. Many employers refuse to look past a criminal record and ex-convicts are left with few job choices. This can be demoralizing and often leads to increased recidivism.

Prisoners in the Georgia Department of Corrections are now beginning to feel the recession too. Georgia correctional facilities have started cutting back meals for the prisoners, some days inmates are forced to deal with smaller portions and other days they go entirely without lunch. Other correctional facilities have been making changes like forgoing fresh fruth and milk. Many believe this is the start of a terrible trend that could force inmates to skip meals, depriving them of necessary nutrients that may in turn cause irratability and spark violence. Many correctional facility heads argue that these cut-backs are not harmful and do not deprive inmates of nutrition.

Read the full article and tell use what you think about these cut-backs.
